It's an H23 non-VTEC, so doesn't have LMAs, I think?

well if its coming from the top end then i would take mercs advice and get it done by someone who knows what they are doing - just make sure the car is left overnight to cool down before doing the valve clearances - if that doesnt sort it then i would go back to using 10w-40 but it doesnt sound like its too bad if the noise is only when the engine isnt fully warmed up. you might also want to fit a hamp shortie filter as this will slightly increase oil pressure

Could be piston slap if it goes away when warmed up. H23 still has FRM liners. Some H series motors are just diesel like when cold until pistons expand when fully warmed up. My A7 does same.

Also has the manual t/belt tension been checked recently? At 55k no one will have probably touched it yet...

Interestingly, an engine flush, new oil and a 300 mile motorway run has quietened it down quite a lot - although it's still a bit tappetty! I am taking it to Rich @ Performance Autoworks next week...
