Difficult to tell from the photo, but looks like that that thing should be twisted round slightly and actually plug in to the hole in the wing? As you say, at the moment it would be getting seriously restricted air flow.Rob_Cool1 wrote:I think your right, I dont really like the design on the air filter because where it connects into the hole in the wing there are too many cables in the way so its only getting half the air.Merlin wrote:It could be TPS/IACV related. The car may not be getting enough air at idle and the sudden shutting off of the throttle body when you press the clutch may not be allowing enough air to get through.
You can test the TPS by measuring the resistance across its contacts. There is a test procedure in the service manual

Il have a look, where does it connect too on the engine? when it cuts out the needle doesnt move so im guessing it looses connection, its weird because a lot of the time it starts working again after a few minutes but recently hasntjjmartin349571 wrote:The speedo is cable driven on 2G's, so I wouldn't expect the speedo to just go dead as it's a mechanical connection? It's fairly easy to get the speedo cable out of the VSS though so maybe you could check it for damage, maybe it's not engaging properly at one end? If you're stationary and the engine cuts out though isn't it normal for the speedo needle to drop down?
Also, have you checked for air leaks on your manifold?? The engine was rebuilt, so maybe something wasn't reconnected correctly when it was put together?
Yep will check all of that tomorrow too, hopefully its something simple :Lwurlycorner wrote:Ok so speedo signal from the ECU is a red herring then.
I still suggest it's worth checking all the electrics I've mentioned though.
Add to that checking the fuse box for dirt/corrosion/water ingress (having seen where it is, right next to the bonnet/wing gap).
After that, it's checking ignition switch (and does an mpi 2g have a main relay?)
the battery, engine light definitely come on as soon as it cuts out and maybe the PGM-FI, not too sure about that il have to go back out and check when it next cuts out :Lwurlycorner wrote:Do you get any other lights up when the engine cuts out? Does the battery light come on for example and is this just before it cuts out, or before?
