As for the crunching mine does it all the time in 3rd only. Sometimes on cold weather have to double clutch to get it into 1st. How do you change the gear box oil/fluid?
Thanks, Kris.

Change of slave cylinder I'm guessing must be pretty easy? (Note to self: I need to buy jacks/stands!)

How do you change the gearbox fluid? Erm... in my case, pay PerformanceTek to do it when they're doing the belts. Sorry, can't help you there.

Is it just me, or based on the number of replacements and issues are boxes a slight weakness with these things?

Surely if its the slave cylinder it would crunch in all gears and trouble to select all gears. But there's no harm in trying that first as its the cheaper option

Auto boxes are a weak point, manuals are generally bullet proof except for the m2b4 (which crunches as it gets on a bit)

Agreed with you about the £180 round fuel trip! sorry about that.

Just my 2pence wort but will explain. I had similar symptoms in my civic. Hard to get reverse, crunch going in to 5th, and the clutch never liked to disengage at high rpm. The biting point also was very weird. Anyway the clutch had never been replaced so I changed it and it fixed all of the symptoms. :D the pressure plate was weak and the splines dry. However reading what you have posted, and in my experience I'd say that it will be either a synchro worn or a fault with the selector fork. I'd probably go for the synchro tbh. Nice job is a gearbox synchro ;)

Also try : when it won't select reverse or first (obviously at a standstill), after first attempt, release the clutch and re engage it and see if it goes in. If it does then its defo syncro problem. ;) :)

Yeah clutch slave cylinder is right at the front on manual gearboxes really easy to do.
