Woudl be cheaper getting it done at a Honda main dealer too than trailering down there, surely!

it was more the case of getting a specialist to give their view ;)

Rich has probably seen loads of instances of this problem

plus gerry isnt on the forum

well i contacted gerry after your recommendation, this was back in november
told him i wanted timing belt, water pump, all seals done, tensioner etc just so it would be a one time job.
i was planning this for jan/feb time but my hand has been forced now

unfortunately lack of funds mean ill need to sorn the car until i can get some cash together.

parts prob around £220 and same for labour ,the plan was to drop it off first thing and collect it at closing time

Glad you sourced the problem - tensioner without a doubt. How long have you been driving with it sounding like that? It's amazing how loose it gets!

I did like Ratty's first piece of advice - $hit yourself much?

Like he said, and my same logic when I thought my missus Beemer had a snapped crankshaft - 'you'd know about it'. It'll be more than a noise you'd be concerned with.

Well the timing is bad for you at Xmas to have to fix it, but it's one of those jobs where you may as well get the water pump and seals done while your in there. But just goes to show another example of this crucial part of the engine being a common failure point - Manual Tensioner FTW!

Just out of interest why was an auto tensioner fitted to the engines originally? Is there some down side to manual tensioners that the auto tensioner was supposed to circumvent? I think mine needs changing soon as there's been some funny noises coming from the belt side of the block ever since I got the car

Glad you found the issue. I was so relieved when i found out it was the tensioner on my car.

Really bad timing with christmas etc but at least you can lay you mind at rest knowing now what you have to do.

good luck dude!

Apologies. Just realised you were in scotland. Yep it would be totally nuts to trailer it to PAW. My bad. lol

Gerry at performance Tek will sort you out :)

IIRC, the manual needs adjusting as the belts stretch a little with age as part of a service.

i think one of the reasons honda fitted the auto tensioner was to make the car smoother to drive...thats just a guess.
the manual tensioner conversion means that the belts will be quite tight when set to the minimum tension
im sure that rich at paw said he mods part of the kit to allow for more adjustment and i am assuming that means allowing less tension on the belt. its also been stated a few times that the timing belt doesnt really stretch much at all even over time. The only down side ive heard of is that you might need to change the t belt at 30k instead of 60k as being slightly tighter it is under more stress....
