noisy release bearing at idle.

Post by Rob_Cool1 » Fri Nov 22, 2013 10:27 pm

Hi guys.

I'm new here, just bought a 2nd gen prelude and i love it!!

Its all mint apart from a few small things which this clutch is one of them.
When your in neutral and you push down on the clutch and quickly release it makes a funny noise. when you rev the engine it kinda shakes and noise gets worse. They guy thinks its the release bearing but i dont know if the clutch is loose.
Its had an engine and gearbox rebuild which had a new clutch too so i'm a bit puzzled to what it could be. once your moving its fine and pulls through the gears seamlessly.

Any help would be great
Cheers
Rob

Welcome! Nice to see some 2nd gen's on the forum these days :D

So onto your noise... Is that revving the engine with the clutch depressed or up? And in gear, or in neutral?

it only happens in neutral, its fine through all the gears. and its when you lift off the clutch quite fast when you take it out of gear, if you take it up slow its fine. it makes a rattling noise which when your idling sounds like a noisy bearing but if you rev the engine in neutral with the clutch up it sounds worse and it kinda shakes a bit.
I duno if the friction plate could be loose? if so it would've come of by now, i've been really careful and taken out of gear slowly so it doesnt make the noise lol

cheers
Rob

Does sound like release bearing. Friction plate can't really be "loose" as it's fitted on the splined shaft into the gearbox.

You don't always get a release bearing with a new clutch - previous owner may have just replaced the friction plate and reused the existing pressure plate and release bearing.
