Bad dyno run for my Lude.. huge power drop @VTEC changeover

Post by JMBW » Sat Apr 26, 2014 7:08 pm

Was quite surprised when I heard my Lude do a power run on a dyno today.. It really sounded like it hit a revlimiter right after VTEC crossover, also seemed like it dropped out of VTEC briefly. Really noticeable on the print out.

Should I be worried :? any logical explanations? or similar experiences?

What 5th gen do you have and what engine does it have in it? What make of dyno was it on? HK is just horsepower? Rather than KW.

Going by the amount of torque things are not that bad. At 6600 rpm the engine is making 198 nm / 146lb/ft. (6600 x 146) / 5252 = 183.4 bhp.

If you have an H22a5 with no mods that figure would be about bang on the money IMO.

Yes, you are straight on the money Merlin... this is a H22A5 automatic with no mods, and the VTEC xover is not moved...

I might remember one instance before when going in 4th gear and accelerating through the xover and feeling a slight delay/drop in power, but I can go through xover in 1-2-3 gear with good VTEC xover and linear power..

But now my question would be: What can cause this behaver in the xover? clogged oil channels? VTEC solinoid? Oil Pressure? worn mechanism? other?

I had a look in the valvecover + head and very recently and it was really fine, absolutely no gue or sludge build-up.

first place to check is the vtec filter buddy, make sure that's all good...obviously oil levels are the next one.

Perhaps some injector cleaner as well. It could be a slight hesitation?

Vtec engages at 5250rpm. The drop in the curve is about 4800 which is when the dual runners in the inlet mani change from the long to short path. So the graph on this aspect is fine.
