what is the best engine to have in a prelude

Post by firstlude » Tue Dec 27, 2016 1:53 pm

like the title i am wondering what the best engine is to have in a 4th gen , mine currently has the f20a4 i am looking for more power i love the car but when i floor it it makes lots of noise but we aint speeding up  should i just add a turbo or a supercharger , or maybe out the engine but what should i replace it with , i have looked into various engine options but i dont have a good understanding of all the engine numbers and people are saying you can use the head off this engine and the manifolds off of this engine added to the block of this engine :? so can you good people just lay it out in terms a newbie can understand please , i am not looking for f1 power just something thats makes you smile when you hit the loud peddle :)

Simplest, cheapest upgrade to get the smile factor is to swap the engine for an h22.
Any h22 model would be fine (h22a, h22a2, h22a5, h22a7, h22a8) Your easiest option though would be to get an h22a or h22a2 from another 4th gen.
You need complete engine (i.e. with manifolds, engine loom, distributor, alternator etc.) ready to drop straight in.

You'll also need other things like downpipe (might need rest of exhaust, can't remember for sure) ecu and ideally rad etc. (they have a thicker core on h22 ludes) but it's pretty much a plug and play conversion.

If you get an engjne out of a 5th gen, you have slight complications because of different plugs on all the electrical kit.

I'm going to be doing a h22 VTEC conversion in my bb2 in coming months so if you need to know anything just ask... I recommend getting an engine from a 4g prelude (if it's gota go in a 4g that is) as they are what's called obd1, where as newer cars like 5g and accords are what's called obd2, this applies to the wiring of the engine and can be made to work with a bit of know how but it's much easier being new at this to stick to what's in your car already...

You will need:
H22a/1/2/4 full engine
Intake and exhaust manifolds
Exhaust downpipe
H series gearbox
Engine mounts (possibly)
ECU

And to do abit of searching on the Internet :P

I have a full swap available. H22a5 (from a 5th gen), gearbox, loom and ecu. Will be going cheap as I need the space

actually for 2liter 4thgen to have h22a you'll only need engine itself, inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, alternator and ECU everything else is plug n pray :D

of course, you'll benefit of shorter gearing of an h series gearbox and also front brake upgrade is recommended along the swap, since the car gets more powerful and heavy as well and you can actually feel it when leaving old brakes with new engine (trust me, I did that at one point)

so if you're on tight budget but want the " VTEC kick yo" then you can leave your tranny and exhaust as well (apart from manifold) and you'll definatelly feel improvements, but you'll be stealing yourself a bit power and acceleration due to restricted exhaust and gearing.
