Another what the hells that noise post :(

Post by BMCC » Fri Aug 09, 2013 10:15 am

I've been getting a whine from the front passenger area since about a week after I had the lower ball joint replaced. It is really noticeable (for me at least  ) between 50-60mph especially if you get off the gas but I can hear it at different speeds. So far I've looked at:

1) Changed tyres to winter wheels in case Motegis were unbalanced
2) Front brakes are free but I've stripped and regreased the pins/pads/piston
3) I can turn the front disk without there being any noise
4) Motegi side skirt is secure with all clips etc in

I have sprayed a bucket load of wax into the side sill & 3/4 panel during the summer (on this side only) but never noticed anything after this.
The drop link looks a bit off and doesn't look like it is sitting square (in lower arm), i.e the bush has more on one side than the other. Other than trying to square up this which looks like its going to be a git as the nut just turns :( , could the bearing be knackered or should I look elsewhere?

Have you checked what the bearing feels like yet (Given it a wobble and hand rotation test to see if it feels loose/tight/not smooth)?

Knackered bearings normaly have more of a rumble though, than whine?

I've turned the disk with the caliper off and it was smooth, I couldn't get any movement out the disk if that is what you mean by wobble?

Worth doing with the wheel on, because you have more leverage on it then and can get both hands properly in contact (firm grip!) so you can generally feel it better then ( :? strange as that sounds considering you're insulated from it through rubber then! )

But yep, that was what I meant. Grab it in both hands and push/pull/try to wobble it and see if there's any movement.
Give it a good fast spin when you're listening for any rumble.

Replaced a rear wheel bearing a few months back after listening to it get gradually louder and louder over a couple of months. Definitely started off as a whine/hum rather than a rumble. Really put my teeth on edge

I've done the old 12-6 wheel shake and I get a bit of movement out of the wheel :( There's a bit of a click when I push pull the wheel. I tried the other side doing the same and couldn't get anything. Given the whine i get and the movement, looks like the front passengers wheel bearing is on its way out.

Never changed one of these before and going by the manual it looks a little complicated. Back to the garage me thinks

Sounds like it then, yep. :( but at least you know now!

FWIW parts for the front bearing are easy to get hold of and relativity cheap though (opposite of the rear bearings!).

Normally happens if your passenger isn't used to vtec.
