steering rack knock

Post by stinkypaul » Thu Jun 22, 2017 1:21 am

On my 5th gen, if I turn the wheel with the car stationary and the engine off there's a knock. It seems to be coming from the rack, where the steeting column goes into the rack.
If the wheels are off the ground or the engine is running there's no knock. Is this common/normal or does it suggest that something is wrong?

Also my universal joint is dry, should this be greased?

Cheers

I think it is normal, mine does this, even when I over tightened the rack internally, it still did it.

Thanks guys. Well I won't worry about it too much but I will take a look at the inner tie rods then.
Cheers

Lock the steering, grab the tyre while the tyre in on the ground in the 3 and 9 position, give a good pull in and out in these positions, if you feel a knock its most likely and outer or inner rack end. Have a friend repeat the test while you hold your hand on these parts and feel for play. If it's a case of when your turning the steering from left to right while the car is stationary and you feel a slack then this is normal

Seems normal to me unless all the preludes I've driven have the same issue. Mine does it and three others I test drove did it.

Certainly not normal, but after 20 years thats whats you get. Would not worry too much about it, mine has this stationary knock for 4 years already, god knows how long it was like this before me and its not getting worse, so yeah. Make sure your both tie rods are ok.
