front brake knocking

Post by affy1989 » Sun May 05, 2013 5:33 pm

hi

i have a 1989 honda prelude had it for about 2 years now when i bought the car the front brake pad anti rattle springs were missing i did not realise because they never gave me a problem. the car was parked for a long time as i drove the car and gave it couple of washes the front started to rattle more when i went over speed bumps so i spripped the brakes found the anti rattle springs missing and pads were wearing at a angle so i replaced pads with cheap pads ac delco thats what they had at the time put in springs and everything was alright for 3/4 months until couple days ago its started again i gave the caliper a pull and they feel loose again im stuck and worried it might cost me a fortune to fix might need calipers and carriers and sliders no one caters very well around birmingham any help will be very much appreciated

thanks

Hi there.
Does it still brake ok?
Have the pads worn pretty evenly?
If so, I'd have thought your calipers are unlikely to be at fault.

When you say anti-rattle springs, do you mean the ones on the back of the pad or the ones on the carrier that the pads sit in?

hi

thanks for reply wurlycorner got builders in house coudnt get on here for couple of days.
about the pads i changed the front pads and anti-rattle springs which go on to the caliper and push the pads down.

if you go on this link i changed item number 13 cause one was missing and other was loose also the ca had been standing for a while and previouse owner only drove bout 500 miles a year looking at mot mileage.
but i know what u mean could b caliper not pushing out far enough to make it tight il have a look at that.
when dis problem came back now i have to press the brakes just a little more than normal.

thanks for your time.

Ah ok, yep understand which spring you mean now.
So long as that's there and also item 22, the pads shouldn't rattle.

Sounds like you should look into how well the calipers are working then. Either siezing piston or slider pin/s (items17/32)?

Uneven pad wear could be a clue to the latter.
