Brake disc question

Post by ADS1 » Mon Jun 24, 2013 7:58 pm

I will be replacing my front brake discs shortly, and have been looking at what is available.
My question is. Is there any need or benifit for fitting grooved or drilled discs, as opposed to standard discs, on a road car?

Yes. Noise. Lol.
Go with blanks and uprated pads every time.

If you buy cheapies don't get grooved or drilled, I personally stay away from drilled as sometimes after a lot of hammer and a bit of age they can develop little cracks from the drill holes plus they usually just end up filled with crap, I opt for grooved jobbies but get decent ones with decent pads too,
Failing that just get standards which unless your in to really toasting it with plenty of twistys will do you happilly I'm sure..

Grooved do give improved braking as they disperse crap on the face better but as I say, quality of disc is more important, they can all warp.

Ok, i will stick with normal blank discs then :D .Need to do it soon, as i have what can only be described as horrendous steering shake under braking, and discs are the only thing up front that are not new.

Pagid, mintex, brembo, ferodo even blueprint are all good standard disc mate.

Don't bother with origional honda, they have lower carbon contents and don't take punishment so well ;)

Pah! I have drilled discs on my UKDM and not had a problem with them.
(Notes about the makes above are good advice.)

Though I would say the only discs I have had warp on me (within a few hundred miles) were a brand new set of genuine Brembo's I put on the Xantia. (Ended up going back to OEM spec Bendix and had no problems with them)

Mintex pads and discs I put on the Volvo were excellent. And they're the best/most sexily boxed car parts I've ever purchased, too!!! :10:

They will be fine. Always blank discs IMO. I don't buy the claimed benefits of drilled or grooved discs, if anything they reduce the contact area of the pad / disc, and generally cost you more.
