Humm from the rear.

Post by Lovedoctor » Wed Jul 17, 2013 6:07 pm

Just spent a bit of time and money preparing my car for its MOT. Replaced a caliper, new pads and discs, oil and filter change. Took the car for a wee drive and there appears to be a hum/drone from the rear (not my ass) :-). Anyone got any ideas?

Wheel bearing I bet.

If it disappears when you veer left or right you can identify which side.

Would it be a Mot fail? How much is a new bearing/hub? :x

They wouldn't know if it makes noise or not, it would only fail if there was play in it or if they felt that it didn't run smoothly when they spin it by hand.

as said not an mot fail unless its ready to let go which is dangerous anyway it will feel sticky or oval when turning the wheel if its excessively worn then it will fail

i gave it a few turns after the disc had been stripped from it and it appeared to turn freely. Frustrating! Oh well! Better pass

You get a while before they become mega loud. It's a complete hub assembly on the rear, around £90 a side for decent parts. There are cheaper options on ebay but in this case I do think you'll get what you pay for!

I did both mine and got the bits from Jozef.

Yeah drove mine for a few months with a noisy bearing until it started to drive me mad.

Fitting takes about an hour and its much cheaper to buy a third party bearing kit than to get one from Honda. Think I paid £90 for an SNR kit (after topcashback refund) plus £65 to get it fitted. Honda wanted £260 plus VAT or something stupid.
