Even more handbrake woes!

Post by EvilDmen » Fri Aug 02, 2013 2:51 am

Well it's 2:40am and I'm giving up for the night!

Going on from my other thread where my driver's rear caliper handbrake had collapsed inside and the arm wasn't moving when I pulled the handbrake.

I've now replaced the caliper with a known good one,
then bled it,
wound both rear pistons back and forward a 1/4 turn,
pumped the foot brake 30 times and the results are:

The passenger's rear is now locked up without the handbrake applied,
The driver's I can see the arm moving when the handbrake is applied and the piston is moving but no force is applied to the disc.
The results are the same no matter how many times I strip them and start again.
I'm too tired to try more tonight! I've put up back together and will try again tomorrow night.
Looks like I'm getting the bus to work! :(

Can anyone see where I'm going wrong and point me in the right direction?

Cheers in advance guys!
Lee.

ARe the caliper slider pins free on the drivers side? If they're seized you'll get very little force transferred to the pads.

On the passenger side, have you got the pin on the back of the pad correctly lined up/engaged in the cross slots on the piston? If not, that could result in pads stuck against the disc. Otherwise, wind it off again and try bleeding (carefully/slowly) again.

My new calipers came with the instruction that after finishing install/bleeding, apply the handbrake then press the pedal repeatedly to set the handbrake slack adjuster mechanism up (rather than just yanking the handbrake up and down).

Yeah the pins on both sides are nice and free with new grease. And all aligned correctly.

I'll have a go with the handbrake up before pumping the pedal next time. Cheers for that! :)

There seems to be an awful lot of conflicting information about the handbrakes on both the 4 and 5Gs; For instance Honda say don't set the handbrake first, but don't say anything about turning the pistons back a 1/4 turn to reset the handbrake ratchet.

I'm so fed up and confused with it! :?

Well the solution was incredibly simple!

All the MOTs since I got her show a handbrake imbalance. And because of the passenger side locking up even when the handbrake was not applied I decided to loosen the adjuster under the centre console.

It was wound all the was up. I loosened it all the way off. Reset the rear pistons, pumped the pedal 20 times and they both now work perfectly!

Just so everyone knows DO NOT apply the handbrake before pumping the pedal. Neither handbrake worked at all after doing it that way!

Cheers for all the help guys! :D

If memory serves, i do beleive it says in the manual ,to slacken the handbrake and pump the brake pedal to reset everything after caliper service. Then re-adjust handbrake.
I need to do this on mine, as my handbrake is much better on one side. If this dosn't help, then i guess i have a stretched cable.
Glad you got it sorted.

When you've wound the piston in I recommend winding it forward 1/2 a turn instead of a 1/4.

But your problem sounds like mine was. Wind the adjuster all the was out under the centre console first!

Good luck!

My hand break light keeps going on and off when I'm driving about. Is this the same kind of problem your having?

I don't know how to pull the codes. I know the connector is the blue plug under the centre console that's about it. Lol

I meant read about low brake fluid. The handbrake light doesn't give a code.
