Sunroof seal - what adhesive to use?

Post by vanzep » Sat Jan 16, 2016 3:31 pm

Just finished painting metal sunroof for 4th gen which i got from @indigolemon to replace the totally rusted out one on the BB1. Very poor paint job as it had to be done outdoors
So just putting it all back together and was looking for advice on whether to use some adhesive or something to stick it in place. I know there are brackets the bolt in and hold it but when i took the sunroof apart it looked like there was some grey adhesive around the outer edges of the metal panel.

I have some hondabond here or some roof and gutter sealant.....either of them any good?
or is it best not to use anything - bearing in mind i will probably want to take it off and repaint it in the summer :?

any advice appreciated :)

i was thinking of that as i couldnt get hold of a metal 4g roof that was in good shape but graham came up trumps with a sunroof he had stashed away many years ago :) ive had to strip it down and do a few repairs but its looking ok and is solid so just wanting to get something on asap. There are massive rust bubbles on the one on the car and it must be leaking so this will do for know thats for sure :)
If you find a 5th gen glass roof then let me know ;)

Are you asking about adhesive around the inside of the rubber seal?

If so - YES.
Clean out the old stuff and squeeze a line of PU sealant into the bottom of the rubber seal. That's what's recommended in the service manual and that is one of the big things that will stop the new sunroof going the way of the old one - otherwise, water gets in, sits in the bottom of the seal, right where the spot-welded seam of the 2 skins is (so it gets drawn up into the gap between them).

There's no adhesive used anywhere else.

well ive gone ahead and used hondabond  i just put some around the edge of the metal sunroof panel, put the seal on and clamped it into place.
using the hondabond was pretty messy
im hoping that will bond as well as pu sealant would- i guess it should as its used to seal the rocker cover gasket :?
