quick and prob stupid Q but how do you power a head unit out with the car? Have an old unit hidden under my bed for a few years and want to check it before I fight to fit it to my 'new' car.

Connect it to the battery via positive and negative. DONE!

Yep. Just remember to put the positive feed onto both the switched and permanent live.
