5G Alternators

Post by mercutio » Sat Jul 11, 2015 3:50 pm

will it do any damage not having the alternator plugged in while driving ???

i have had 2 new alternators they both charge but i still have lights on the dash and its stopping the 4ws working i have searched and found the plug is so the ecu can tell the alt to run in low power mode.
so what could be the issue both alternators where new seems odd they would both be bad but still charge.

Probably the rectifier if it's still charging the battery. When a bit faulty they can leak ac power as well as dc. You can do a quick check by setting a multimeter to ac and checking the voltage across the battery.

I don't think there will be an issue running without an alternator. Apart from the risk of running out of power!

I had 2 new Lucas remanufactured alternator and both charged but not kept the battery light on. The 3rd alternator I tried was fine. Seems to be more luck than anything.

I had the wrong amp alternator and that cause my 4ws and touch screen heater not to work + cat temp light come on. But the battery still charged. I got a 100 amp alternator and now everything works fine.

 I'm confused what this test will achieve? Think we established recently that the 4ws and abs ecu's will think the engine is not running if you have the alternator unplugged, so your abs and 4ws will still not function anyway if you unplug that connection?
