Delimiter/Convertor Question 4th Gen

Post by vanzep » Tue Sep 05, 2023 12:58 pm

Just wondering if anyone knows or has any advice on delimiter and km to mph convertor chips on 4th Gen JDM Import BB1.JDM 180km dials in place but reading in mph

2 chips fitted by prev owner(s) just wondering if i can get rid of one of them...and still keep vtec in 1st and delimit. dont mind if it reads in km or mph

1st chip is marked as a delimiter chip is fitted at the ecu in the passenger footwell
2nd chip is marked as convertor chip and is fitted at the speedo clocks behind the dash

Im thinking that possibly delimiter at ecu fitted in japan and that when it was imported another one fitted at dials to convert km to mph.
The 2nd chip possibly is a delimiter as well as speed convertor - if so i can remove the one at ecu?

If the 2nd chip is between the ECU and clocks, won't that just be a speed converter? Since it is downstream from the ECU, it won't be able to delimit anything.

Some blurb from the internet:
HondR wrote: This chip is particularily effective on JDM imported cars for two reasons:
1.) JDM Imported cars display speed in km's
2.) JDM Imported cars are speed restricted to 112mph (180kmh)

The Hond-R vss chip has two functions from one product....it has the ability to provide a solution for both issues and although it is designed for the imported car has many more uses in the performance market.

If you have fitted a jdm engine and ecu into your uk car and it is now speed restricted, then the chip can be easily soldered to the ecu wiring loom to derestrict only while leaving your uk clock displaying mph as they were intended.

If you have fitted jdm speedo cluster such as jdm integra/civic ek9 or SiR in your car then the chip can be soldered to the wiring loom behind the clocks to convert the kmh to mph and it even comes with a sticker to cover the "kmh" to "mph".

If fitted to the loom on the gearbox for the vehicle speed sensor, the chip will convert to mph and de restrict all at the same time.

Delimiter/Convertor Question 4th Gen

Yes, looks like you have 2 speed convertors fitted, one at the ECU speedo feed (which delimits) and one at the clock feed (to make them read in MPH).

Remove the one at the ECU and you'll have vtec in first but a limit of 112mph.

Remove the one at the clocks and you'll read in KPH.

thanks all for the advice
i will remove the one at ecu first and see what happens...i think i may remove the second one at the speedo and just let it run in km - my 5th gen reads in km so maybe best to have both the same
plus im getting a bit of needle wobble between 80-100 wondering if this is to do with these chips but im also going to have a check of the vss and the speedo as well.

Delimiter/Convertor Question 4th Gen

I'm thoroughly confused why adding a delimiter also removes VTEC in 1st? :|

Also now wondering whether mine really is limited to 112mph...

your best off without these chips anyway - i doubt i will ever need to go over 112mph :)
if you fit the delimiter/speed convertor at the vss then you dont lose vtec in 1st gear.
I have only ever seen them fitted at the speedo as this is standard practice in uk when importing them.

Delimiter/Convertor Question 4th Gen

They are a workaround in terms of delimiting. Effectively it alters the speedo pulse rate and in doing so fools the ecu into believing the car is travelling at a slower speed than it really is. So 112mph (180kph) in the real world is seen at the ecu as 70mph.

Because vtec does not engage at low speeds, 1st gear now falls into this zone and does not engage.
