Boot rust removal

Post by macky_6 » Thu Jun 06, 2013 10:18 am

Hey all,

I recently stripped out the interior of my boot. There are a couple of holes at the bottom and a tiny amount of water has leaked in causing a wee bit of surface rust to form.

Firstly, what should i use to plug the small holes? They are about 5mm in diameter and perfectly round, suggesting they are there for a reason? Or should there be a plug on them? I was thinking of using a panel tac but will this stop the water getting in?

Secondly, what should i use to get rid of the rust? Area is about the size of a tennis ball. I don't want the repair to look shabby as if there was a major leak that needed repairing.

Thanks :D

Yep, pics would help please.

Thoughts on dealing with the rust would either be rub it down, treat it (kurust type stuff) and then re-spray with the original colour. This would probably be noticeable but the paint finish inside the boot isn't great because there's no lacquer applied to is, so it probably wouldn't look too bad.
Or you could drill the area out with a hole saw and fit an appropriately sized plastic bung???
Or do the paint repair above and then cover it with sound deadening?

weld a penny onto them :) mind u the fuel tank is right below the boot - so stick the penny down with some rvt silicone :)
