Resonator removed = hydrolock risk?

Post by bb1boy » Mon Sep 30, 2013 10:27 am

Hi all,

Having recently removed the resonator box from my 'Lude, I couldn't help noticing the road through the hole directly under my Apexi air filter...

What have you guys done (if anything) to combat this hydrolock risk, especially during the recent floods we have experienced?

Bear in mind this is my daily driver so saying, "don't drive through puddles", is not really an acceptable answer!

Cheers

I don't consider it a major problem as the filter side of our cars is in the middle of the road whereas in the US (where most hydrolock stories come from ) the filter is on the kerb side where all the puddles are. Also if you have an after market filter in the engine bay I doubt much water will get up there.

Fair enough, so just try to keep the front drivers side corner out of deep water.

yer, dont stress. the 5th has a plastic splash cover that covers the whole underside but if the 4th doesn't remember that it is in front of the front wheel and that most, if not all, spray from puddle splashing will end up going backwards across the car rather than forwards and up into that cavity. The vehicle motion will tend to pull it away from that area as it is moving much faster than the water droplets.

Yeah, the 4th SHOULD have one of those splash guards ..but mine's long gone. What you say makes sense though, water should be directed away from the air filter as you travel forwards.

Honestly you should be driving in deep water higher than your fig lights. Even in my van with its air filter around 10" higher than the ludes I still flooded the engine.

I'm assuming: shouldn't* and fog*? :D

I saw an episode of Car vs Wild where this pair of nutters attempted to drive up a river, the snorkel broke off their Suzuki jeep thing and they filled their cylinders with river water! Made me think of the hole under my filter and the rain/floods we have been plagued with lately..
