Sorry to hear that Bludge. It's not fun when something takes this long to get to the bottom of, I know.
Hoping you get some joy soon. Shame there isn't someone experienced nearby by that can help with this one.

Yeah im gutted. do you have any idea why pulling the 10a fuse for the radio wouldnt reset the code anymore?
And the only thing i can think of is that my wheel alignment is out and its somehow putting a strain on the relays causing them to become faulty.
Is that even possible?

Either that or something isnt connecting right which gets bridged when its wet.

Should pulling the radio fuse reset the 4ws? I thought that fuse only fed the main ECU and the 4ws has a seperate fuse??? (don't have manual/car to hand to verify atm but I'm sure that's right :? )

Both are interesting/plausible sounding theories. Don't know, in answer to the first one, though!

Yeah pulling the clock/radio fuse resets the 4ws system, must be linked in to that fuse somehow. thats the general opinion on the net anyway, and it has always worked to reset any 4ws error code up until now.
There is a dedicated 4ws fuse as well though you're right.

Now i dont think the problem lies with anything to do with the auto shift position box. with it set to park and the key interlock and interior lights and everything else working correctly (sooo glad to have intermittant wipe setting!!) the 4ws did work 2 or 3 times in a row perfectly a few days back. so it must be something else.

The relays click when i start up the engine, so the ecu is obviously getting power.

A friend of mine is resoldering my old ecu for me, and after a conversation with him about it, he thinks that the relays are getting too much power and its caused them to start sticking. (he was a bit more technical about wording it but it went over my head a bit)
He reckons its worth replacing the relays on the board, any idea where i would get those? is it just basic electronic stuff you can pick up anywhere?

I feel like im close to getting it sorted, but also miles away! as if it does turn out to be dodgy relays then great, but i still have to find whats causing them to go bad!

one day i'll get there...
