They are in unbelievably immaculate condition/cleanliness simon!

Vanzep is spot on, there are some reps available made be a guy in Poland. He has posted up on here before, so have a look in the parts section?

They would be by far and away your best bet. Getting a pair of original covers in good condition is very difficult!

@vanzep & @wurlycorner Thanks for those tips gents. I'll do some digging around and see if I can nab a pair.

I have perfect brakes - at long last

Post by simonc » Tue Nov 04, 2014 3:17 am

Hi all, well the long running saga of my brakes has now been put to bed and I am totally thrilled with what happened yesterday. To be honest, since Jason fitted the pads last week the brakes themselves have felt tons better (mind you, they could not have been any worse) and at least I had a lot more confidence in the car. However, there has been a most annoying 'grinding/metallic' sound coming from the driver's side brake since they were done. I spoke with Jason last week about it and he said to hang on and see if it disappeared. If it was still there then we arranged for me to go on Monday (yesterday) and get it sorted.
He admitted that perhaps the pads were not right for my car (or my pootling around) kind of driving and told me he was going to fit Bendix pads as they were better.
Here's the pads out of the box - they felt very abrasive.
Image

It was very interesting to see the disc wear after one week of driving on the pads he fitted last week. As you can see, the discs were not shiny and the centre part was obviously not wearing properly.

Here's the driver's side after one week of wear.
Image

And here's the passenger side. A bit more shiny but not shiny-shiny.
Image

Anyway, he then fitted the Bendix pads and asked me to go for a short drive and then go back and see how everything was. Immediately I could feel a lot more bite and even better, no metallic grinding noise. All good news. After tootling around for twenty minutes or so I went back so we could take a look and I could report back to him on the feel.

Here's the passenger side after I got back to his garage.
Image

And here's the driver's side. A remarkable difference after only a short time.
Image

What was interesting (for me anyway) was to look at the pads after the short drive around town.

Here's the passenger side pads (Already the blue stripe has worn away)
Image

Here's a driver''s side pad, (the outer one) where the blue stripe is still visible, albeit worn.
Image

So, I'm now happy to report that the brakes feel a million miles away from what they did two weeks ago and looking at the discs this morning outside the office I can see both of them equally shiny across the entire surface which must mean all is well. Finally. I'm really chuffed as I feel completely confident and not scared when confronted with the mad drivers and the dangerous situations they create on the roads out here. The simonc brake saga is over. :) Thank you for your patience and support.

Glad the brakes are now working ok and the mechanic replaced the pads for you FOC.

Looking in those pics I've noticed that whoever fitted your driveshafts last is a knobend.
The driveshaft nut should be peened over (that's the dent you can you see on the shoulder) to stop it coming undone. Looking at yours, the nuts on both sides of the car have been peened over, but not into the keyway on the end of the driveshaft, so it'll be achieving absolutely nothing.
It's not something to panic about, but get the drive shaft nuts changed and correctly peened over when you can.
Compare with this pic below from mine;
Image
See the way the peening has gone into the keyway? (nb: ideally the peening shouldn't split like that and I have since replaced the nut again - I was a bit too aggressive with a cold chisel first time round  )

Also, it looks like yours has longer driveshaft stubs and has washers fitted on the outside of the hub, so that the driveshaft nuts sit right on the outside of the hub rather than inside the recess. That's an interesting difference. It looks to be OEM, but not sure why it's been done that way in your market?

Thanks Iain, yes I can the difference between yours and mine. Actually I've been wanting to ask about the 'dent' for ages as it always struck me as a bit 'Fred Karno' so thank you for educating me about peening. (Oooh, I'm becoming a right little expert  )
I'll certainly ask Jason to look into it although frankly as we've had these wheels off umpteen times these past weeks I'm a little surprised he hasn't ever pointed it out.
I think I get what you're saying about the driveshaft stubs and washers so is that why mine are 'sticking out' and yours look more 'recessed'?
Either way, I'll print your picture and with your thoughts I'll send it off to Jason and let him comment. Thanks again Iain, much appreciated.

@mercutio You sure know how to scare the pants off me mate. It's not that serious is it?

They just look like they are not tightened on far enough for the preening to actually do anything ? Maybe you should ask the guy who did the brakes to take a look maybe the washers or spacers or whatever they are don't need to be there?

Hi Merc, actually I cut and pasted Iain's photos and sent them across to Jason yesterday and he agrees that summat is not right.
Actually, I'm pretty free this afternoon so I'm skiving off and taking the car over to let him have a gander. More anon.

Here is a shot of my front hub (mid butchery) so you can see how it should sit. I think Wurlys pic is of the rear.

 you are right mec, my photo is of the rear...
I was tired and searching through my photo's in a hurry!
Blatently I am also an idiot and the washer should be there behind the nut also!

However... The nut should still not be overhanging the end of the shaft and the peening should be in the keyway, but obviously not by as much difference as in my pic! :D

Here's another;
