Not feeling the love right now.....

Post by lucylou » Tue Mar 10, 2015 9:04 pm

Following on from my comments on the Japfest thread.....

The needle on my rev counter has been bouncing around for some time now, only when the revs dropped below 2500rpm with no other apparent symptoms, until today. Was driving along when the needle started doing its usual thing but the engine stuttered and spluttered to match!!

Pulled into a lay-by and tried to restart a few times to no avail. Starting to panic a bit at this point as I have my 3 year old son in the back. After a few minutes wait, turned the key, all good! What the chuff is wrong with the thing?!

When it was just a tacho problem, I was thinking it was probably an earth fault. But if it's now affecting the engine, it sounds like a distributor problem?

Not the end of the world at all - distributor (if it is that) is a very easy fix and can be as cheap as £60 for the part?

I've got my mot coming up. Scary times. I get the feeling the distributor will be a drop in the ocean compared to the bill I'll get after the mot!

Having a nightmare. Car's been in the garage for a week now. They can't find what's causing it to lose its spark apparently. Engine cuts out going along and won't start. Then you go back and try again Half an hour later and it starts fine! They put a new cat on to get the emissions down and found the old one had all melted inside. The new one has also started to melt. Wtf Is going on?

Guys, does that sound like the distributor igniter?

@lucylou As a precaution I would ask them to check the ignition timing as well. If the timing is out it can cause the engine and exhaust to run hot. There is a specific procedure that has to be followed see the link below. Also on the 5th gen the timing cannot be changed, only inspected/checked.
