Under Bonnet Cover / Vtec Noise

Post by nonamecc79 » Sun Aug 16, 2015 7:09 pm

Just a quick question; do under bonnet covers actually have a purpose??

The reason I ask is that i'm trying to recreate the sound that my old prelude made on the one that I've just bought. My new prelude doesn't give the same sort of sound when vtec engages. So far its only got a k&n pod attached to the standard intake pipe.

Does the stock intake tube dampen the noise?? My old prelude had a stainless steal intake tube with a pod filter on the end.

Also does the exhaust play a major part in the vtec noise?? My old lude had a "normal looking" longlife custom cat-back that sounded perfect. Not very loud until you stick your foot right in it.

Cheers

Under bonnet covers reduce vibration and shield heat from the bonnet (and a bit of noise).

And yes, the standard intake has resonator chambers that reduce the noise.

The bonnet liner has the very least effect on induction noise.

If you want induction noise, change your intake.

If it's noise in general you want, change the exhaust (and intake).

If you remove the bonnet liner, all you risk doing is burning/cracking your paint and getting pissed off because of a vibrating bonnet, with no discernable extra intake noise.

If you really want noise, fit the exhaust I have sat spare - that is noise!

What exhaust have u got?? Might take it off you for the right price.

Wouldnt a decat make it rasp a lot?? I just want a bit more of a deep tone and a slightly louder Vtec engagement.

A de-cat would change the tone of it a bit but I don't know how - I don't know which bits of the exhaust affect which part of the sound tbh, I'm sure there are plenty of others on here more knowledgeable than me that can advise.

You don't have to go de-cat if you change the exhaust (and if you do go de-cat on a 5g, you will fail the MOT).

There are pics of the exhaust in the breaking thread here

That includes the de-cat part.

De cats...The straight pipe decat will make it raspier although the baffled decat quietens it a little and removes some of the raspiness that you can get. All very minimal in the grand scheme of things mind.

When i put the cat on my Lude for MOT the sound change alot. Lost that raspy open sound.

I prefer a raspy sound rather than a wanky deep drone.

Cat off. Sound back. Im sexy again.
