Is there a less intrusive but still useful alternative?

Probably Skrill/Moneybookers is the only real competitor (other than Google Wallet...).
You'll most likely not find anything as widespread though. I'm sure I read that in one quarter PayPal handled near $70 billion in online payments. Not sure how intrusive Skrill are.

I just do bank transfer for anything not on eBay and where you can't use a normal card payment option.
You now don't need a PayPal account to pay on eBay - you can pay directly by any card (they use PayPal to process the transaction, but that's their call at their end, it works just like a normal card payment through any provider). If you buy using a credit card, you would then come under usual full credit purchase protection anyway, so paypal can drokking do one!
