There is a screw in the throttle body that is specifically meant for setting the idle, I had to do mine recently. Don't do it from the throttle cable!

Glad the gearbox bolt issue worked out nicely.

Regarding the engine mounts, I have an insert in the front, the two sides are poly filled and I've left the rear one alone with no mods. I get no vibrations at idle but the engine feels planted to the car.

yep raising the idle was only a temp thing until i get to the root of the problem with the idle/vibration

Yep, as jj said, idle needs to be adjusted on the idle screw, not the throttle cable.

As I understand it, it's the rear engine mount that transmits the bulk of the vibrations through to the cabin, makes sense really.
Pretty sure I have poly on the others and normal on that one. No issues.

ive got hold of a cambelt side mount so will sikaflex that and get it fitted and see if that balances things out a bit.
spotted there is a leak at the back box to fix but even then the car has always idled on the low side but not been an issue.
im not sure what its is but ive bought a tin of electrical contact cleaner and a tin of carb cleaner so will do my usual fiddling about and cleaning things until i find out where the problem lies.
ive had idle issues with my BB4 but i cant remember what it was that i did that finally solved it im sure it took me years to resolve

That's a common misconception, there is a screw that is sealed and not to be touched that sets the butterfly, someone mixed that info up with the idle screw somewhere along the line........

Its a recessed copper bolt with a flathead. Top left (front face) of the throttle body as you look at it from the intake pipe.

Yep, it's all described in the service manual how to adjust the idle using the screw (so there's no question it is a service item!)
