For years I have looked at the cut out on the flap and thought 'this is crap, it doesn't hold the cap at all'

How can it be an optional extra, or do they just fall off over time? Neither prelude had it.

Still not as good as the Jaguar XJ (X300) that I once had, the petrol cap was magnetic, and simply snapped to the back of the petrol flap.

Civic 10th Gen is capless, a really nice little design feature, even if the pressure release can spray you with petrol on occasion.

Yeah it's an option, they don't come with the car from the factory.

Does it actually do a good job of holding the cap securely while you're filling up though?

Yes it does a good job, I have had my one for 10 ish years.
