Yep, this sounds like either a blocked cat or collapsed silencer baffle to me. ;)

Start with changing the cat; or try a decat pipe - which would be a cheaper way of establishing whether this is the problem or not. If that doesn't sort it then change the exhaust. One of these two fixes should see you good. :)

What exhaust do you have on it btw?

Car is completely bog standard is all respects.

Tipping it down here at the minute so not sure if i'll get chance to get the cat off today :(

Still, glad that others are thinking along the same line.

Are the ebay cheapy exhausts worth going for? Id keep the original back box, not a massive fan of the rude-boy style ones you see.

Recently passed an MOT so not worried about a working cat.

Don't go for chepy exhaust. I did it once and it did not pass next MOT. When I seen it I was wondering what keeps it on place as it get so rusty. So at the end of the day I paid about 100 quid for it and did not last even one year.
From then I have stainless one which cost me tripple as much but there is no probs at all with it after 3 years since it been installed.

well, ive purchased a stainless decat with bolts/gaskets (51quid), and a pattern part center section (66quid).

Car probably wont be with me for much longer sadly so no shiney new performance parts for me :(

Quick question regarding the decats, will it through a CEL given that there is a sensor post cat?

No you'll be ok, the sensor just detects for overheating, earthing it to the chassis will remove the cat warning light that'll appear when it's unplugged.

So new mid section of exhaust went on, and a decat from ebay.

Car is back to its old self, and much better to boot thanks to the decat. The difference is noticeable, from about 2.5k all the way upto the limiter. I actually hit the limiter , as the car felt so much free-er at the top end. Hardly any louder also...

Worry over nothing!

Thanks for the suggestions, looks like we know what were doing :P

I didn't get to see the innards of the cat, but the chap said he hadn't seen one like it before, said very long slithers of metal came out of it about 10 inches long (rather than the charcoley brickette type lumps that normally come out of failed cats).

had to pay 40quid for the priveledge of having both fitted, but given the recent drop in temperature outside i think it was money well spent.

prelude lives to see another day (until the next MOT when ill have to put a cat on).

Now if only the missus wasnt trying to get me to sell the car :(

Glad to hear it's sorted :D just keep your eyes peeled for a 5th gen breaking and pick up a cat from that.
