Ooft, yes, that's what running a cooling system with just water and no antifreeze does!
That can be followed by core plugs and metal cooling pipes starting to leak, either slow weeps you can't see, or suddenly letting go and dumping all the coolant in one go. Hopefully your new mechanic has caught that in time, or it sounds from the list like he's replaced all those bits anyway :D

That third shot from the bottom of that pipe was almost choked with accumulated rust and crud. Sorry it didn't come out well enough to show it but it was pretty spooky to see the lack of flow through it.

wurlycorner, you are absolutely right. If this fundamental issue is not taken care of ( or regularly seen to) then this is the result. The knock on effect of leaving the cooling system alone is this horror-fest and a lot of stress, time and money to get right.
Like I said at the top of this post. You've all been so very helpful to me I hope that my story can help others on this site to perhaps deal with their idle problems ( I'm not saying this is always the solution but perhaps it could always be looked at).
Once again, sorry I don't know the parts but I trust you can see just how much damage has been done to so many things when the cooling system has not been taken care of.
Thanks guys and I'll report back after the Singapore blast.
Regards
Simon
ps - thanks Merlin for helping with the pics.
