Issues with 5th gen auto trans

Ok so tiptronic was no better

still going crazy after a few minutes driving

So I'd very much like to keep the car as an automatic, has anyone got any good experience with garages/mechanics who offer a refurbishment/re-manufactured gearbox service? I've seen a lot of comments on this type of service on the american forums and they seem to suggest the gearbox issues return with a year or 2 but I'd have thought if looked after properly they could last much longer.

The 5th gen autobox is as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Convert it if you wish to keep the car a repair wont last! As it is your car is worth scrap value only. Sorry to be blunt but with 10 years on this forum and PUK before that I have seen this story many times!

Although merc has happily run a tuned 5th gen auto for several years now, so it can most definitely be done.

Thanks Paul, I do appreciate the bluntness as I need to be fully aware before spending the £££ and Iain I take your point as well, seen a lot of good posts on here from Merc about the Auto's.

I think what I need to evaluate now is should I keep the 5th Gen I have and start gathering parts for a conversion or should I cut my losses with this car and break it / sell it for spares and get a manual car instead (If I don't try to somehow keep it an auto)

The car I have is a 2000 UKDM 2.2 Vtec, It's done 120k miles, the engine runs wonderfully, it's got a full service history and it's in the dark metallic green which seems to be a color I don't see often at all and I personally love. As you might have guessed I am not very experienced mechanically but willing to give anything a try.

the conversion isnt a really difficult one tbh the gearbox is the heaviest bit the reverse light possibly the most fiddly bit sourcing all the bits possibly the most frustrating bit

if you have some mechanical knowledge and some good mates you could do it in a weekend i reckon, there are quite a few people on here who have done it.

I have a full manual conversion kit, everything you would need I think, except the gear shift gaiter/surround, possibly gearbox mount (not sure what the difference is on a 5g, between manual and auto) and also not sure if any difference on the driveshafts.
