A mate of mine who's helping me (WAY more experience than me, and he's teaching me as I work on my cars) had a look and all looks in order (currently only checked visually, I will admit) - he also suspects the relay. The relay does 'smell fused' as well (though I've never smelt it before now, so maybe it always smelt like that

Still - got a very air price for the replacement relay from vanzep, so it's not a big issue if it turns out not to be the relay. Plus, swapping the relay is real easy, so may as well do the easier checks first, before I start digging around under the dash again (very tight mess under there thanks to the £$%£$% that installed the alarm/immobilizer).
