Jack stand placement

If it doesn't lift it high enough, stick some paving slabs (make sure the ground is flat!) or decent wood (a good solid bit of timber not some cheap crappy bits of 1 x 1/2 inch planed pine or mdf!) under the jack to lift the jack off the floor, giving you the extra height so you can get the axle stands under.
Don't take any chances, but this can be done perfectly safely if you use the right stuff in the right conditions and if you don't go lying under the car while you're putting the stands under, you don't put yourself at risk.
My trolley jack works fine for the front central point, but I always have to give it some extra lift at the back (rear towing eye), otherwise the wheels are still just touching the floor.
