If the height and width of the engine/gearbox fit in the envolope, anything is possible with a lot of work.
I can't see any reason why the 4ws wouldn't work. All you'd be losing in the engine swap is a compatible vss signal so that's all you'd need to rectify.
You could keep the same clocks too surely, just move the red line if that bothers you? You can get custom overlays made for dials easily enough. If you sort the vss for the 4ws above, that would sort the Speedo too. If you want any extra warning lamps, there's plenty of space in the centre dash section (people have added in vtec lights here before, for example). That would be far simpler I'd think.

I remember seeing a 3000gt/gto with a diesel lump from a passat in it. Why? Because the owner did many many miles and loved his 3000t. So he got another put a diesel lump in and uses it as a daily for excellent fuel economy.

^^^No i think based on the 5 cylinder VW transporter engine as they used to buy them off AUDI for the TDI V70. That was the only derve they ever used before bringing out their own 5 cylinder. Could be wrong though as ford started pojking fingers into volvo around then.
imo the weight of the engine and box will seriously affect the car. The later honda derves will be expensive. this is a cool idea but will cost you thousands if you ever finish it. I honestly cant be sure the engine and box would even fit in the bay. Its a big old chugger.

If it's a later V70 (phase 2 onward) it's Volvo's own common rail 2.5 litre 5 pot. My mate has a V70 D5 Sport and it's brutally quick for a huge machine. 185bhp and 295 lbs/ft
