I think I rather play it safe and run a cooler, turbos run very very hot.

The lude does already have an oil cooler of course - a basic/simple one, but that's all my turbo Citroens have and they're happy enough.

I guess it depends how often it's going to be driven hard and for how long? Track/road use is very different, of course...

Don't know how much scope there is in the standard oil cooler to cope with the increased temp that is going to be produced by the turbo as the cooler wasn't built with a turbo in mind. Just thinking back to the Pulsar and although this has an oil cooler it was designed and built for a turbo car and there is some lee way in the cooler when getting more power out of the Sr20DET. However once you start pulling a fair bit more power out of the engine most of GTIR owners will put some form of aftermarket cooler on. Usually in place of the top mount intercooler as a front mount is usually needed when going above 300bhp (about 30% increase in power). If I was turboing the Lude I think you'd get about 30% extra so I'd run an external oil cooler to be safe. Why spend all that money then let it go tits up for the sake of an oil cooler?

I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I can try it without then if it starts getting hot I can park the lude up and order a cooler as its not my daily. I'll be doing local runs once the turbo is fitted so it wouldn't have chance to get too hot anyway as I'll be watching that oil temp gauge like an eagle :) IF its not needed its just more weight, clutter and joints to leak etc. To be honest though I am expecting to have to use a cooler, maybe not at stage 1 of my build but when I'm using the sleeved block, forged internals and higher boost :)

Yes I would watch the temp gauge like an eagle. If I thrash the Pulsar the oil temp goes up a fair amount, back it off a bit and its back to ~80 degrees. I take it your not going to be on the track with the car? if so an oil cooler would be top of the list for me. You'll get tempted............ :lol:

The petrol Turbo CXs I was particularly thinking of, run their oil temp at 110 - 120 ^C when on boost :lol:
