Another vote for the halfords advanced professional range here. when i first started working on cars i wanted a cheap socket set. knowing absolutely nothing i went and bought a 1/4 set.
I put that thing through hell not knowing that 1/4 is for the small jobs! the 10mm and extention bar (which were regularly used and occasionally accompanied by blows from a lump hammer whilst tacking certain stiff bolts) were the only things to go. they still worked fine but the metal had chewed enough that the socket would fall off. very annoying. took them in to the store with no recipt and they changed them over with no hassle. had the set for about 5 years now and its still going strong.

Since bought a 3/8 set and other bits and bobs and will replace my 1/2 set with halfords if i manage to break it.

And with the sales you can get pretty much everything you need for next to nothing.

....aaaand i have just realised i sound like an advert for halfords. i just think their tools are great for the money.

just another note about sockets...

where possible, get yourself a 6-sided socket set, as well as a 12-sided set.

6-sided will generally hold the head better and if it's rusted/damaged you've got more chance of getting it off in one piece with 6-sided sockets ;-)

Just in case anyone is interested I went for one of the Halfords socket sets in the end, this one http://www.halfords.com/motoring/garage ... socket-set

Haven't used it for anything yet but seems pretty well made and bearing in mind it was half the usual price and they replace anything if it breaks I thought it was the best bet.

Thanks for everyones input.
