High idle

Post by akiragost » Sun Mar 08, 2015 9:00 pm

Heya guys this is a bit of an odd one, but basically my car seems to have an intermittent highish idle, usually around 1500 rpm. What starting car it's fine, it's only once I've accelerated and come to a stop, the idle stays at around 1500, I found that I can rectify this by using my feet and pulling the accelerator pedal towards me and it drops back down to about 500 rpm and stays there until I rev it up again, it will idle at 1500 again and as before it's fine when I pull on the acelerator pedal towards me and this rectifies it. Not hugely an issue but enough to bother me. One this is that I removed the throttle cable from the clips that it is attached to on the rocker cover, would this have made a difference?

Do I do that from the engine bay and any kind of oil in particular? The cable is covered in rubber or plastic no? Sorry if it sounds bit newb =s

it might be a bit sticky use 3in 1 oil a few drops on the cable where it comes out of the sheeth then pump the pedal it should travel along the cable.

Without a cable oiler thats about as much as you can do check the spring on the throttle body return as well and the spring on the pedal

sometimes it's possible to use a small syringe, in place of a cable oiler.

I drove the car this morning, and it seems fine when the car is cold?

Probably because it's running off the fitv. Once heated up the throttle closes so your cable might stiff or you have moved it slightly. Once warm rev it from the throttle body itself and see if it returns to its position.

Check the throttle body itself isn't sticking. Lisa's was doing that for a while (but the other way - sticking closed, so it needed a kick to free off). When it's idling high, open the bonnet and try manually pushing the throttle butterfly closed. Watch to see (and feel) what is sticking - the cable or the butterfly itself.
