Engine Whine

Hi All,

Parked up at work this morning and I noticed the engine was making a weird noise. It almost sounded like one of the fans was on. I opened the bonnet and the fans were not on, and I could hear this whine on idle, not high pitched. I could also smell burning but it wasn't overheating and it could possibly be just the normal engine smell as I don't usually smell under the bonnet

I know this is all a bit vague, I have taken a video but I can't seem to get it to upload to photobucket at the moment

I assume it's unrelated but my front right tweeter was crackling when I first started the car this morning, by the time I got to work 45 minutes later it had totally died.

My drive is about 25 miles, hopefully the car gets home ok

Do you have an amp and sub in your car? Are the power wires too close to the speaker wires..? It sounds like it could be electrical interference.

No amp or sub. Both sets of speakers are aftermarket and have tweeters and crossovers but that's it.

Was the noise coming from the engine?
Are any of the drive belts misaligned/rubbing on something? Or the cambelt maybe?

100% from the engine. Belts that I could see looked ok. I rang Rich at PAW and he said it could be Cambelt, hopefully nothing too serious as I have spent enough money on it recently. Beginning to think having a 21 year old car as a daily driver might not have been a good idea

I have to drive 25 miles home in it shortly, wish me luck!

Run the engine and looking down from the top, see if your bottom pulley has a wobble..

If you stick your head near the cambelt end of the engine with it running (be careful not to stick your ear/hair/general appendages into the drivebelts!!!) you should be able to tell pretty easily if the noise seems to be coming from inside the cam cover/drive belt area or somewhere completely different.

12v electronic supercharger that you may or maybe not have fitted? Cos 50 brake gain innit.....

Or (carefully!) use a stick as a stethoscope.
