4G 4WS light on

Post by Space1999 » Tue May 09, 2017 12:14 am

When jump starting my 1996 4G 2.3i 4WS, I accidentally connected the leads around the wrong way (don't ask, it was a long day!) There was a bang and since then the 4WS light is on – presumably I've blown the fuse? The radio also isn't working now. Where's the fuse for both, and are they standard types? Any help appreciated...

Can't remember precisely which fuse numbers but...
Fuses are either in the engine bay fuse box (drivers side, near the brake master cylinder) or the cabin fuse box (inside drivers footwell behind a cover).
All the fuses inside the cabin and some in the engine bay box are standard type blade fuses.
There's a high current 4ws fuse in the engine bay fuse box iirc, which is a screw in type fuse.
The covers on both fuse boxes have labels saying what fuse is for what (generally gives you all the info you need, although some of the fuses have more than one purpose but it doesn't list all, e.g. clock fuse also supplies the engine ecu but it only lists clock). Since yours is a UK car, the labels will all be in English, so easy peasy :D

If you have an after market radio, be aware that there may also be a fuse either on the back of the radio unit itself, or the power feed wire to it, near the head unit.

I bought a second hand fusebox, way cheaper than buying those very expensive large ones.

In case he needs to replace any of those large fuses, they come in at about a tenner each! A second hand fuse box will have those in it (usually) for about the same price plus loads of spares.

How does the large 4WS fuse come out? Do you need to unscrew it?

Just called 'bolt in fuse'. Might need to also refer to it as 12v automotive.
Should be able to get them in any motor factors, online etc.
