Clunking

Post by Slosh2222 » Wed Nov 15, 2017 11:08 pm

So thismorning on the way to work I developed a clunking noise coming from the front , the car was only moted a month ago so I would like to think it's nothing suspension wise ?
It makes the noise if I accelerate and then quickly let of the throttle , I here it more at lower speeds when I change up or down a gear so I'm thinking it could be an engine mount so my question is ...
Is there an engine mount that is common to fail or could it be something else maybe ? I have d2 Coilovers that have only coverd 5 thousand miles so I would like to think it's not suspension related any thoughts ? :?

Front and rear mounts are known to go.

Front mount is the prime candidate. If it's original, you can guarantee it's gone.
The other common fault that could cause this, is the downpipe hanger on the back of the engine - they have a habit of fracturing, causing the downpipe to bang as the engine goes on/off load.

Thanks for the replys :D il get it up on a ramp this weekend the downpipe is new although it was not the best fit  and I'm guessing the mounts are original so it could be either or to be honest is it worth uprating the mounts or just replacing with standard ones ?

Depends if you like harshness/vibration in the car or not.

Energy Suspension poly inserts are a good solution for fixing a broken front mount, but will put extra strain on the rear one. I found when the rear mount also had the insert fitted, the dash juddered awfully when pulling away, however that may have been because I didn't complete the full engine mount re-torque procedure (so engine may have been misaligned slightly)

Plenty of guys on here have DIY PU filled both front and rear mounts and been happy with the results.

Yeah I'm thinking I might just fill the original ones just for the time being just to see how I get on with them as the car is set up for fast road use it's not a track car so I wouldn't want to spend money on expensive mounts if I can not live with them for everyday driving
