Please help identify this component

I have another thread in which i was having trouble getting my reverse lights working, after a bit of googling and taking the center console apart again i have found this:

Image

I have no idea what it is or what it does, only that with it unplugged the car wont start and i couldnt get the key out of the ignition, but all the dash and radio are fine.

the grey connector looks to be the same as the one detailed in this thread http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2272661, so im wondering if mine has been converted to manual from auto at some point.

I was going to try connecting the appropriate wires to the reverse light switch, but i would like to know what the white box everything is connected to is first. can anyone shed any light on it?

Is there anything on the other side?

Looks like the shift lever position switch from a automatic. Page 23-185 of the service manual.

its unfixed pretty much where you can see, like just shoved in in front of the gear stick under the radio. I'm sure the grey connectir is the same as the auto shifter connector shown in the thread but the white box doesn't look like a leftover from an auto shifter. I am guessing the brown connector is some sort of power source and I didn't try the car with just that one connected, might give it a go after lunch.

I think this is the case. so if i tap in to the wires shown in the thread i linked and run wires to the revese light switch, that should sort my reverse lights out right?

And is there anything else i need to look out for with the conversion? i have a big thread on my issues with 4ws, could the conversion have something to do with that?

Thanks for the help guys.

i always thought that when the conversion was done all that gubbins was removed ;)
but yes that being left behind if the ecu thinks you are not in park the safty cutout would not let you start the engine ;)
and without the auto shifter being put into reverse the lights would not work.
sounds like they put in a manuel box but still running auto ecu. cheap barstewards ;)

Ok i have found a writeup on what to do to get rid of the shifter box, but how do i check if its an auto ecu? where is it located and will it have a serial number or something to indicate if its auto or manual?
