Guys....roughly how much am i looking at ££ to change it, the car has not been very well looked after so god knows when it was done.....if at all.

Depends how much work you want doing.

You can get it done at Honda for around £260, fixed price.
That doesn't include changing things like the water pump.
Others on here say that also doesn't include changing the tensioner or balance belt etc. but I have a receipt from my local Honda dealer that shows it does, and them also having to change other things like engine mounting bolts because condition meant they couldn't be re-used (at no extra cost because it was a fixed price repair).
If you go down the Honda dealer route then I'd say discuss in detail with the service department beforehand what the price will include changing and what it won't and then agree any extras you want done.


There are various opinions on here as to what you should get changed at the same time.

Many on here will say change water pump, oil seals, tensioner etc. at the same time.

Personally I don't go for a water pump change - they're a reliable bit of kit.

The oil seals make sense (you can't see if they've started to leak and will trash the cambelt over time if they are leaking).

Likewise some will say go for manual tensioner conversion. That's completely unnecessary unless you're heavily tuning your engine. These things have run all this time with the auto tensioner. They're fine.
Stick with that for simplicity (if you go manual tensioner you'll need to get the tension re-checked after a few miles - more £! for no gain).


If you don't go the Honda route and want everything changing, the pattern part list will come to about £200 anyway (IIRC from a recent thread? Someone please confirm/deny my memory there!)



Either way, budget-wise you're looking over the £200 mark for labour/parts, minimum.

I'm not advocating either way, but I've been on the same water pump for 122k and all is well (or at least appears/sounds so). But I'm still changing it when the belts get done very soon. ;)

As for Honda fixed price, someone on here recently went to Honda for a quote and it was NOT the fixed price offered for other models. They wanted quite a bit more than that! I think that's right, it may have been @Giomani? Maybe he could confirm.

But then other members have gone in and got it done at Honda for the fixed price.

My receipts show it was in the region of £500 when it was done main dealer, w/o water pump.

main dealer will rip you right of, ive priced a kit over here in Ireland, its 110euro from a motor factors, ill be doing it myself but if you have a local mechanic it wont cost that much, around 100 id say.

Bit like the 2.5 hours labour quoted to someone else this week to change a rad, when I have receipts proving it should be far less than that?
Something fishy going on with some of these dealers... :?

Obviously some of them haven't been successfully indoctrinated into full on 'Honda Happiness!!!' :lol:

my water pump went at circa 120k after a particularly hard drive to work one sunday , it leaked rather than failed though :idea:

Don't say that Phil, I have to drive to work tomorrow :lol:

I've been listening for the usual noises and stuff and I don't seem to be loosing any fluid, temp is always good. Then again I thought you could put a MC on upside down. But still it will be done because if everything is is being done it might as well be changed too.

Speaking of this Phil, if you are up for doing it I will of course pay you garage labour prices ;) I'm only going to spend the money elsewhere but you appear to know what you're on about and you're much closer to me than where I normally get stuff done! Either way is cool ;)

Bit much isn't it, but this was before I had the car so not too bothered :P

I have a receipt for a timing belt and water pump change in ky car and the previous owner payed £340 from a private garage down south
I hit the limiter in my h23 vtec still didn't kick in
