Aren't the VR-4s pretty much an Evo on steroids with AYC, TCS, 4WS and an extra 500cc's in the engine dept?

Ok, is it only the Galant VR-4 that has 4WS then? Do you have the RS VR-4? I really like those cars, if I had to get another estate I would go for a VR-4.

The only Galants with 4WS were the 6g ones (around 1990)

The 8g (1997-2002) Galant/Legnum VR-4 never had 4WS.

Most VR-4s come with AYC, and most of them are tiptronic.

You have a few different models (I'll only suggest pre-facelift ones, you'll struggle to get a facelift in your budget):

VR-4 Type-V - this has no AYC, just an open rear diff (aka poverty spec)

VR-4 Type-S - this has AYC, and most are automatic/tiptronic. There are a few manuals about, but they're typically much more expensive. Don't discount the automatic gearbox (mainly because the manuals are rarer, therefore command a price premium), because the automatic gearbox suits the car really well, and makes it into a great cruiser that you can also have a lot of fun in.

Super VR-4 - mechanically and chassis wise, this identical to an automatic Type-S, there's just some stick-on-tat on the body and red interior - they didn't make many of them (and all of them that I've had experience with have been absolute dogs for some reason - I think they were near the end of the pre-facelift production run, and they were thrown together with random bits left over from the production run), and command a ridiculous premium for some unknown reason!

VR-4 COTY - a special edition in 1997 to celebrate it winning Car Of The Year - these are all an automatic Type-S with pearl white paint and black leather interior.

I can answer questions on the VR-4 all day long if you want :)

If you go for the 2.5V6 (NOT VR-4), please don't buy an automatic. The gearbox in this version works well but has a serious design fault which means that it doesn't last. Mitsubishi knew about the problem while the car was in production, but did nothing about it.

Yes, the only weak point with the Galant V6 n/a automatic is that it can strip the splines on the input shaft - this means new torque converter and new gearbox.

The VR-4 box doesn't suffer from this.

:(

You could try taking her out for a drive in a roly poly Disco and then a legnum? The difference in the drive between ahem 'every' 4x4 and a 4wd sports estate might well do it?
