Ok, yes I admit, the whole question wasn't as well worded on here as it was on FCF...
somedrokkingnutterwho'soneradhoseshortofafullcoolingsystem wrote:Hi,

I'm currently in the middle of a rad/intercooler change on my Activa turbo. It's been in the back of my mind for many years to retro-fit air con to the car (black car, black interior does = hot in summer!) and clearly as I have the whole front of the car stripped down atm, this would seem the logical time to fit the condenser, if nothing else yet...

So I've been looking around to see what bits are available and having a read on here to find out what I can about general info on the system, but I still have some basic questions atm, if people can please bear with me.

It looks like there are various different manufacturers of the components and I think I've seen at least 2 different designs of condensors and read that there are 2 different types of connectors in use?

So question number 1, can someone please give me a brief run down on any differences in types of systems fitted, what bits are/are not interchangeable between them.

Question number 2 are there any pro's/con's about the different types of systems? I.e. is there one I should try and get because it's more efficient, more reliable, bigger supply of parts etc.

Question number 3, has anyone else out there done what I'm trying to do, out of interest?

Question number 4 (lastly) is there anyone near me that's breaking a Xantia with air con, that I could come and remove so I have all the bits

Thanks in advance...

EDIT: Just to say, I'm planning on getting the intercooler/rad back into the car this coming weekend (5/6th April) so would be great to get this wrapped up by then if poss please!
Does that make sense now?

made sense to me before

but still if you take your compressor with you it will be easy to assess whether it will fit your car

Merc, bless you, I think you've had another one of your mis-reading/punctuation moments...

(That means I don't have a compressor, or any bits to take along for comparison! )

Seriously, I need to take myself off somewhere this weekend to do something, so I'm not tempted to go and buy one of the CX's in that auction, or the Xantia V6 that's come up for sale on FCF stupidly cheap :scaredtoss:

If it's of the right age(s), the A/C systems may be designed for use of R12 or R134a refrigerant.

Whilst R134a is technically a replacement for R12, but the change in refrigerant by the manufacturer may have introduced other changes into the A/C system.

In order to ensure that the "correct" refrigerant is used (and identified as such), the connectors were changed to prevent filling of an R134a system with R12 and vice-versa.

Therefore, it would be recommended to get the entire system from either an R12-equipped vehicle, or an R134a-equipped system.

Yep, I get where you're coming from - my note about the connectors in particular! Pretty damn sure all Xantia's were R134a from build, so I don't think there's any difference there.

The 2 different type connectors I've read mentioned aren't the gas adaptor ports, they're elsewhere in the system (somewhere!). I think the difference is between flanged or swaged couplings, IIRC from when I read it last weekend. So whatever component it is at that location, they wouldn't be compatible, but I dont know which has turned out to be better over time, where in the system the different joints are (i.e. is it everything, is it only one component) whether all the other bits are interchangeable or not and how you tell which one you're buying (if you're buying a new component).

They only seem to sell by manufacturer and model, rather than any description on which type of coupling?
