Was the 205 not faster than the 208 then?? I find that surprising, the 205's look like they weigh drokk all and the 1.6 is meant to be rev happy and the 1.9 quite torquey for it's size. What engines do 208's have??

IIRC from the last hot hatch comparison they did, they compared 205/207 Gti's and the 205 was slower than the 207?
But if I scratch my grey cells even more, that was comparing the 205 1.6 Gti with the 207 Gti, on the basis it was nearer the same capacity, than the 205 1.9 Gti. :?

But whatever, it's not surprising if cars made 30 years later are faster/handle better. If they weren't, then that would be a pretty poor indictment of automotive engineering development. The modern ones are a damn sight less interesting though! Will people be admiring them after 30 years time, in the same way I admire a 205 1.9 Gti, AX Gt etc? (Never was really one for the R5 Turbo - it looked good, it went very fast, but there was no hiding just how appauling badly and cheaply made it was!)

EDIT:  The old/new comparison was older than I thought... Apparently it was Series 3 Episode 8 in 2003 Makes me feel :old:
And it was the 205 vs 206 :? And it was the 1.9 not the 1.6 (and still lost)

Good episode that one.

There was another one like this as well, for old/new turbo cars? Compared an old quattro with a modern one? Am I remembering that right?

They did a comparison of race/rally cars from 30 years ago compared to modern road equivalents - from memory, they had Ford Mk2 Escort vs Ford Focus RS, Audi Quattro vs Evo X and Ford GT40 vs GT...?

Yeah they did, I watched that episode the other day on Dave.

It was a MK2 Escort vs Focus RS - Focus won.
Audi Quattro vs Evo 9 - Evo won.
Ford GT40 vs Noble M12 GTO - GT40 won.

Oh, well. This evening's episode was a bit better.

I must put my nerd pen to paper, though. Clarkson reckoned there'd never been a Danish motor manufacturer. There were at least nine in the Edwardian period. Better still, the Hammel was a direct contemporary of the original Benz Patent Motorwagen. (What a shame its name is now used for a machine designed to shred cars ...)

I enjoyed this evenings one and I did like that mad orange thing, ALOT! I'd definitely rather have that than a modern Ferrari, any day.

Really enjoyed last weeks too actually. The McLaren was fantastic and it was a great feature with fantastic cinematography - they really do still do such brilliant stuff on that front, so much better than anything else.

 and the thrashing the engines in those supermini's were getting in the last section of that film  proper bouncing valve stuff
Have to say, the power output of that fiesta engine is very very impressive. I expect it has sod all torque though? And that really was SOOO expensive in comparison to the Dacia, it was ridiculous!
