Quest OD player

Post by wurlycorner » Tue Jan 20, 2015 2:17 pm

I bought a youview box (the humax one, to replace my previous Humax DTR) over christmas.
Well, well pleased 8-) (although a couple of bits about the youview UI software aren't as good as the humax own UI) but anyway, I have a question about the Quest OD player...

Works perfectly, so I've been happily wading my way through the whole back catologue of wheeler dealers in evenings and weekends  but what makes no sense to me is that when watching it OD, unlike on 4OD, there are NO adverts!
How's that work out for them making any money out of the service?
The ad breaks are still there but there are no ads, so it comes straight back to the programme.

Obviously I don't mind this, but I'm just curious - is it like that for everyone else, or am 'lucky' and for some reason it doesn't load them for me? :D

It will be the YouView player that wont be showing the ads.

I have an Android TV box running XBMC and when you watch stuff on the ITVplayer channel there are no ads (just the break like you describe), whereas on the ITVplayer website or iOS app it plays the adverts.

Also I need to see if I can get the Quest OD player on XBMC, it sounds good.

I haven't tried the ITV player (nothing on ITV that I watch) only iplayer (obv no ads  ) Quest (no ads) and 4OD (ads, just like when I used it on my phone).

I've had a look at various of the other players on the box (NowTV, SkyOD, Netflix etc.) but not used them yet 'cause they cost money.

I'm considering subscribing to Netflix (primarily so I can watch the 2 series of Damages that weren't shown on terrestrial) but not sure... I don't like subscription services (why I don't and never will have sky) but Netflix is a no-contract one, so that might work out ok.
I just need to understand how much we might use it first and it's difficult to gauge that, since you can't access the content list until you've subscribed! By looking around on line I managed to find out a few things, but still can't see the full content list

8-)
Is that 100% fully accurate and up to date?

Also, for us noobs... How does this work? Do they only ad things to the catalogue, or do things get taken away as well?

EDIT:
 just found a 'last chance' section. So it looks like some of the stuff does get removed? Does everything eventually, or is only some stuff short lived?
ps my mind is made up, apparently "strippers vs werewolves' has been removed today, so that's it, it's officially a no-go now  :troll:
;)

No idea as to its accuracy, I just did a Google search and it was the top result :)

I don't use any of these streaming services myself - but they do remove stuff.

Dunno why I'd not managed to find anything before then

Maybe I was just looking through all the official channels?
TBH I am surprised someone bothers to go to all that trouble of manually updating that jobby

There are also some great films on netflix at the moment, well worth the 5.99 a month in my opinion

Especially if you watch Netflix US via proxy. Different stuff to UK and seems to be a wider selection.
