New, Gen 4 Prelude H23

Post by EthanH23 » Sun Oct 20, 2013 6:42 pm

Hello from Liverpool!

I've just picked up a cheap gen 4 Honda Prelude, I needed a cheap car asap for work after my last one died suddenly, and I seen a deal I couldnt ignore, haggled a bit, and got a bargin!

The car isnt perfect by a long shot, as I got it for under £500, but with some TLC and new bits, hopefully she'll keep going!

I had to drive it home 70+ miles, and done over 150 in the first two days i've had it, the only problems being the ABS light coming on, and the 4WS light coming on too easily on bumps/etc.... I had a bit of a read online, and the ABS light only comes on once I set off, from what I've read, that seems to be a speed sensor? And the 4WS could be a sensor, or could need resetting, so in a day or two im going to pull up the fault codes.

There wasn't much service history with the car, just the last lot of MOT's it had went through, so as soon as I can, im going to pick up a timing belt kit, water pump, radiator, oil cooler, etc.. Just give it a good going over!

Anyway, I'm happy with my purchase, love the car already, and can't wait to get some money spent on it!

Welcome!
Looks like quite a decent lude there. Nice and original, facelift, with full EL dash 8-)
The 2.3's aren't that common these days and are a nice engine.

If the ABS comes on when you move off then yes, it's very likely to be a sensor. And if the 4WS light then comes on after a couple of mins of driving, it's likely to be a rear ABS sensor but as you say, that can be confirmed by pulling the codes (nice and easy on a lude :D and the full Honda service manuals are available via the forum wiki )

The ABS/4WS lights coming on after travelling for a little bit could also be a broken brake light bulb...

Swap both brake light bulbs - mine didn't even appear to be damaged, but it still threw the faults, until I replaced them with 2 new bulbs.

But usually handbrake light is comming on first.

Also 4WS might be absolutelly good and its all related to ABS.
Just do selfdiagnostic first and we will know more.
