^^ plus there's no way to remove 100% of the engine flush, which means even after filling up with fresh oil there's a slightly higher risk of something going awry through lack of lubrication! :?

I had an issue with crud inside the hydraulic lifters on my Golf, I flushed it out with a couple of 1,000 mile oil and filter changes. Expensive, but it meant not having to put harsh chemicals into the engine!

I can't remember who ATM but someone here recommended just buying a cheap oil of the same grade you will use in the end, do some miles, drop that oil then put in the good stuff.

Another option is a knackered oil cooler allowing the 2 to mix?
Not heard of this on a lude before, but have known it on other cars.

(Part 17 on here)

What do the inside of the water galleries/rad etc look like? Are they rusty coloured? If so, it could have been run without antifreeze in it for ages (amazing how many idiots do that...) causing components like the oil cooler to corrode and perforate internally.

RE the posts about it not overheating on long runs: usually once moving at speed the air flow into the engine bay is enough to cool things down sufficiently to mask a cooling problem. The real test is how long it can stand stop start traffic! That's when overheating issues become really apparent (as I know all too well :( )

Happens a lot on old 8v VW injection engines, between that and the head gaskets on those things you're forever finding misery mayonnaise. Here's my Scirocco Scala's oil cap to illustrate the joys of VW ownership

That's how it's done

I'd say it's likely your head gasket is okay. If it is shot then you'd get more symptoms than just mayonnaise on the inside of the filler cap - like poor running, rough idle, steam from the exhaust, overheating, etc. Best do that oil change and coolant change ASAP, too...

I've had about 5 Jaguar XJ40s, all of which collected mayo on the inside of the filler cap - sometimes quite a lot - despite having no head gasket issues. They were worse when doing short journeys, that's usually the culprit.
