ah I didn't know that. thanks. still seems like a loose connection when I turn the wheel in diagnostic mode though. merc mentioned something called a clock spring. might try and take the wheel off and have a poke around. am I likely to get and airbag to the face??

Disconnect the battery for at least 10 mins before removing it and put it somewhere safe when you've got it off

Cool. i will have to try and look up a guide for it or read the manual as i have never removed a steering wheel before.

Thanks for the advice!

Two bolts hold the airbag in. There's a little hatch on the left of the wheel you need to pop off, and the other one is behind the cruise control switches. As ammo says DC the battery, and fire the head lights on to clear any residual power floating about in the system. Then wait 10 to 20 minutes.

Right, i have today wired up the reverse lights (and run all the cabling for my sub  ) and they are working fine, but without the auto shift position box thingy still plugged in (though with the appropriate wires cut and run to the reverse switch) i was still having problems with getting the key out of the ignition. have i missed something?

Also, might be another silly question, but do you get a tinkling sound from the dash when engaging reverse? like the hazards tick but different?
Or has the previous owner left me a nice little time bomb....lol.

+rep for working all this out so far Bludge.

Stupid question, it's not just the steering lock causing a problem with the ignition key is it?

Thats what i thought at first but i dont think so. as when i first unplugged the auto shift position box you couldnt get the key out at all, i was worried it was stuck but when i plugged the box back in it came out fine.

I will double check it just to be sure but im 98% confident its not the steering lock (unless in some way its connected to the shift position box.)

Oh, also it only seemed to be after i connected the wires to the reverse switch, if i had the shift position box unplugged save for the power wires that are needed to start the car, everything was fine.
Strange.

I wasn't aware that there was a lock to keep the key in, you have to push it in though to get the key out

Yeah, it wont let you push in and turn that final bit to release the key. its weird.
