Worth mentioning, someone on here reckons they might be able to fix my ECU - just gotta send it off to him to have a look at it. So hopefully won't need to start splicing. This is very useful information though in the event that my ECU is beyond repair, as I understand the tcs units are hard to come by.
your ECU isnt broken as such
CrunchyAdams82 wrote:Yes I have a chip fitted. It used to have a 112 mph limit with the original chip, but not anymore. Vtec kicks in noticeably earlier than it used to - about 4700 apparently (ref seller). Haven't tried vtec in 1st yet. I would assume yes.
was it converted to MPH before you fitted the chip?

I have no idea. The car has been in the uk since 1999 so I assume it has.

Possible problem: I broke the original ECU trying to de-solder the original chip. Car would only run in limp mode. So wrote that off & ordered a replacement to get me going again.

The replacement ECU was a 3 plug non-tcs unit, which had a pre-fitted 'chip socket' in it with OEM chip. So I removed the OEM chip, & replaced it with the Spoon copy chip.

Not sure if this ECU is a JDM one though? So if not, could that be causing a problem?

So just to recap, problem was;

1) Tacho didn't work on the auto dials, but speedo ok?
Dials changed for manual dials.
2) Tacho still doesn't work on the new manual dials but the speedo now over-reads? Everything else on the dials works fine?

No other work carried out between 1) and 2)?
(I'm not sure where all the ECU swapping / chip swapping shenanigans fits into this sequence?)

Phil's covered the tacho fault and I agree, it sounds like a km/mph convertor problem for the speedo. (Phil, I PM'd you before reading the rest of the thread btw, which then answered the PM )

If the speedo was fine before but now over-reads and nothing else on the car was changed in between the old dials working ok and the new ones not, could it be that the convertor was fitted to the original dials and so it was removed with them, meaning the new speedo is now reading kmh on the mph markings? (although 30 mph isn't 60 kph, it's 48 :? )
Maybe?

Can you post up some pics of the front/back of the old and new dials?
And just clarify the exact steps of the symptom/work carried out on the car.

Might also be useful if you can post up pics of the stickers on the cases of the 2 ECU's (the rectangular sticker with the part/serial number on)?

If it helps, the donor 'Lude in my garage is a BB1 Si VTEC LSD TCS and it still has the original clocks..

bb1boy, that may be useful..certainly couldn't hurt. Do they work ok do you know? What mileage do they show? How much would you want for them? Do you still have the ecu? What colour is the car out of interest??

wurlycorner, between 1) & 2) the ECU & chip were changed. The tacho has never worked with either set of dials, & it's difficult to say if the speedo was working right on the old dials because they only went up to 140mph so that would've been out of whack anyway.

Where is the mph/kph converter situated then? ECU or dials? I think in terms of speedo, my best bet is to get the correct (jap) ECU installed, as this sounds like it might be the problem.

Regarding tacho, who knows, maybe fitting the correct ECU for these dials will fix that issue too. Again, probably the best place to start rather than cutting & splicing wires. I do intend on reinstalling a tcs ECU ultimately anyway.

Pictures will be difficult as I've refitted the entire dash now, & the ECU is back behind the kick plate, which is a real bitch to get to. Hadn't planned on getting that out again till I changed the old ECU back. But both can be done if absolutely necessary.

So, is the reason that the 2l auto dials' tacho didn't work either, because that too had the wrong ECU?

As I said before, I've not yet had the correct ECU/cluster combination since owning the car. So I'll be interested to see if this does indeed solve the problem.

I should have an answer to this within a few weeks, once I've sorted a correct ECU one way or another.

Yes, they worked about a year ago when I parked the car in my garage but I couldn't tell you what mileage they show I'm afraid and the car is half stripped now too so finding out would be difficult. I also don't know what they're worth [little help, anyone?] There are 2 ECU's in the car, one has 4 plugs on it and a Spoon chip, but this was on the seat so I don't know if this works or not, the other is plugged in to the loom, I'm pretty sure this has 4 plugs as well, I will check later when I get home, if it's still daylight. The car is Cassis red, but it's badly rotten, there's not a whole lot of good metal left on it I'm afraid.
