cheers donald, yes i am not a fan of engine flushes. they leave contaminated oil in the engine. much better to run another 5l through and actually clean out the muck from where it needs to be cleaned.
IMO HAMP are the way to go. ever so slight increase in oil pressure and to OEM standard. So an upgrade over stock. Obvious choice.
Oil? 10w40 semi in our older engines. If you have a fresh rebuild then maybe something more like Gulf comp 10w40 FS like what I have in mine.

i don't know if the school of thought is still the same but people used to recommend using the oem Honda S2000 filter as it supposedly increases your oil pressure slightly.

Ok, leaning towards a HAMP filter now. Which one though?
And which oil? There seems to be quite mixed opinion.

Yeah, fair enough. That is true.
I'm just looking to see if enough people are saying the same thing.

Ok, I have decided on a oil filter;
I'm going to go for a HAMP SHORTIE, because they were designed specifically with vtec engines in mind. Plus they supposedly increase oil pressure by 3-4 psi. Which is nice
After doing more reading up on it, HAMP definitely seems to be the way forward with these engines. Thanks for your input on that one guys. Will the garage need the attachment that you can buy with it to help with fitting/removal?
Oil itself, I'm still unsure about. After reading Pushki's post from opie oils, it would seem to make sense in my eyes to be using one grade of oil through the colder months - say 0w30, and a different grade through the warmer months - say 10w40. And perhaps a happy compromise would be 5w30 or 5w40 for the changeable temperatures we get here in the uk.
Does that sound like it makes sense?
And once I've confirmed this, what brand is best for Honda vtec? Or just any of the more expensive ones? And semi-synthetic or fully synthetic?

That's 'cause yours has been well looked after and you use the correct viscosity oil!Pushki wrote: Mine burns absolutely no oil at all. I never have to top it up. :smug smiley:
Oil choice is all opinions and arseholes and we're all just bound to disagree with each other.
I've posted my views before, I used to be a big fan of fully synthetic and put it in everything, but I found with old engines, it caused leaks because it's a bit more 'aggressive' in that department.
Also with thinner oils on an old engine, you're bound to burn more, so on my ludes I now stick with 10W-40 semi synthetic.
If you look at the Honda specs for the engine (in the other thread) 10W-40 or 10W-30 most closely match the temperature range we have in the UK (though 10W-30 is a less common viscosity to find on sale)
With fully synthetics, I agree with other recommendations of Shell Helix Ultra.
That's based on experience at the garage where my dad used to get his car serviced (The Car Works in Ashwellthorpe, Naaaarrrrrwich) which had proved to them that Helix Ultra 5W-30 to be by far and away the best oil.
To put that experience in context, that garage was only set up by a millionaire business man so he had dedicated trust-worthy staff to look after his fleet of Astons, Lambo's, Maserati's, 2x RS200's and the 6R4 that he rally crossed for fun (and so he could avoid paying VAT on all the servicing work). They found this to be the only oil that allowed them to push out the ridiculously short service intervals on the RS200's (the crank has individual thrust bearings and they last no time at all when you use the engine like it's meant to be used

(And yes, I did used to ejaculate everytime I went there - why else do you think I would go from home in Brentwood, to Colchester to collect my dad's car and drive it up there for him, to get serviced

I don't now (and won't ever again) use Magantec. That's not because I think they product's crap, it just because I got pissed off with Castrol gradually reducing pack size whilst also putting the price up and then changing the forumalation from fully synthetic to semi-synthetic without making that clear on the packaging (it just kept saying "synthetic engineering" on the front, it was only after reading the small print I realised what the dodgy bastards had done).
Think they might have gone back to fully synth now? But anyway, those bastards can sod off for screwing me over in the past.

So in summary, my vote is a good semi-synthetic 10W-40.
nb: that's in reference to a predominantly/fully ROAD USE lude - I'd probably do something different for a track car!
I tend to run Comma Eurolite these days.
That's based purely on them being an independant UK company (which is nice) but importantly one that make the products themselves, rather than getting someone else to do it for them and just stick their brand on the bottle (which is what a lot of the oils out there are).

(Off topic, but it's got me reminiscing now and I think it's worth sharing)
One of the Lambo's I saw there quite frequently (LM002).
Words can't express how much of a beast this thing is up close.
It runs the engine out of a Countach...

This gives some idea...

Thanks for that Iain. I must admit, I was set on some 5w30. But that's several credible posters who have recommended 10w40 now. Plus my engine has done a few miles I think (not sure how many exactly - wrong dials when I bought it & no service history. Nice) I would guess somewhere in the region of 160,000 by the feel of everything. So a slightly thicker, semi-synth is probably going to be best anyway.
Can you get Shell Helix Ultra in 10w40 semi?
