Hi Folks,
And the answer is: Cambelt
Seems like the existing one was so old and stretched that the tensioner was not able to maintain the required tension so it slipped on the teeth.
Rich from Performance Autoworks is going to take care of replacing the belt, tensioner etc. so it will soon be sorted and I'm v.happy that it's in good hands.
One comment from Rich that was of interest - although I was not in VTEC mode, there is still a 15-20% chance that the valves may have come together and be bent - He'll only be able to check this when the belt is replaced and can do a compression and leak test - fingers crossed.
Bristol_bb4 - I hope that this is not what's up with yours as it's going to cost around £400 to get it sorted. I did think that it was the cambelt as the engine did not sound 'right' on turnover - it sounded like one or more of the pistons were compressing but then dumping the compression before ignition, which makes sense as the camshaft/s were out of adjustment due to a slipping belt.
I guess the lesson here is that if you don't know when the cambelt was last changed, get it done asap. Yes, it'll cost a few hundred £££'s but it's cost me a fair bit more with having to rent another vehicle and the 'hassle' involved with breaking down, being off road, using taxis and trying to diagnose the problem. Yes, our beloved Ludes are not worth a great deal, but they are generally very reliable and give great performance as long as they are looked after. I for one can't wait to get back into VTEC mode
Donald - I think that once I'm happy that my Lude is running 100% that it'll be upgrade time - don't suppose you could drop me a PM with what to look for ref. MK5's - you mentioned several things to look for inc. the best 'years' to buy.
Thanks again to all you folks for all your help, advice and commiserations. I don't really know what I'd have done if I'd not been a member of Lude Generation
Dobbs.
